Sicily

Sicily lies at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and is easy to reach from Italy and the rest of Europe by air and also by sea, or by car.

Airports: Sicily has three airports, Palermo, Catania and Trapani. All three are modern and offer low cost flights and national airline routes. Comiso airport, near Ragusa, is under construction. Work is well underway and is scheduled to open shortly.

By Sea: The ports of Palermo, Catania and Messina connect Sicily with the rest of Italy. The main routes are to Rome Civitavecchia, Naples, Salerno, Leghorn, Genoa, Cagliari and Reggio Calabria.
The ferry boats across the Straits of Messina leave from Porto S. Giovanni and Messina. There is a public service provided by the State Railways, as well as reliable and relatively cheap services offered by private companies.

By car: It’s a long drive to get to Sicily and using a car is not the best solution if you are short on time. For those who nevertheless wish to come by car:
Motorway A1 Milan – Naples, follow the route to Reggio Calabria up to Porto San Giovanni where you can take the ferry boat to Sicily.

By train: The Italian national railways provide a ferry connection to Sicily but passengers have to get off the train at Porto San Giovanni where the train is loaded onto the ferry boat. It is probably preferable for participants to use one of the numerous airlines serving the island.
